- Cut the bra pieces and the straps fours times (making sure each side is mirrored), cut the waist pieces on fold twice (mirroring each side), and cut the front and back skirt pieces on fold and on bias once. If you want to add a skirt lining, cut an extra set of the front and back skirt pieces 1 inch (2.5cm) shorter at the hem.
- Align the notches and sew the bra pieces together. Press the seams.
- Sew the halter straps, pull them the right side out, and press. To make pulling them out easier, you can use a safety pin.
- Place the bra pieces (front and "lining") on top of each other, with the right sides facing each other. Sew them together along the sides, leaving the top and bottom open. Insert the halter strap inside each piece and stitch it in place. Turn them right side out and press.
- Align the bottom side corners of the bra pieces with the notches marked on each slide of the waist piece. Stitch them to the waist piece.
- Sew the thicker ends of the back tie straps to the sides of the waist piece, making sure to stop ½ inch (1.2cm) before reaching the hem. Back stitch.
- Repeat the same process for the other waist piece (“lining”) and the second set of the back tie straps, again stopping stitching ½ inch (1.2cm) before reaching the hem. Back stitch.
- Align and pin the right sides of the waist and back strap pieces together. Stitch the waist pieces to the bra pieces, and stitch all the way around the back tie straps, stopping when reaching the seam of the waist piece, and making sure the seams of the straps are sewn under. It should create a tiny gap. That is to separate the straps from the back skirt. Back stitch.
- Pull the straps out.
- Sew an elastic band along the waistline of the back skirt. Finish the waistline by folding it twice (2 x ¼ inch or 0.5cm) and stitching it in place.
- Sew the skirt pieces together on the sides, making sure to start stitching the back skirt ½ inch (1/2cm) below the waistline, and aligning the hemline. Overlock (or zig-zag) the seams.
- Attach the front skirt to the waist piece. You can either overlock (or zig-zag) the seam or hide it underneath and top stitch.Note: The waistline of a skirt cut on bias may be too wide to match the length of the waist piece. That’s because cutting it on bias creates a stretch. Before stitching, baste stitch ¼ inch (0.5cm) along the waistline of the front skirt to prevent it from stretching.
- Finish the hem of the dress by overlocking (or zig-zagging) it and stitching it ½ inch (1.2cm) under.
