Cut the front pieces, sleeve, and sleeve ruffle twice, mirroring each side. Cut the back piece, the back ruffle, and the front ruffle on fold once. Mark all the notches by making small snips into the seams.
-
Start by sewing the bottom seam of the tie. Fold it under twice by ¼” (0.5cm) and stitch. Attach the front top part of the kimono to the front bottom piece, ensuring the seam of the bottom piece sticks out by ½” (1.2cm). We will later attach the ruffle to that seam. Overlock or zig-zag the seam along the stitch line. Repeat for the other side.
-
Sew the back piece to the front pieces along the shoulder seams. Overlock the seams.
-
Sew the sleeves: Attach the ruffle to the sleeves, overlocking the seams. Sew and overlock the inner seam of the sleeves.
-
Sew in the sleeves: Pin the sleeve, aligning notches. A single notch on the front matches the front side of the sleeve, and two notches mark the back. If the sleeve cap seems wide, sew a loose stitch along the cap and gently pull the string to adjust. Overlock the seams.
-
Sew the sides of the kimono and along the sleeve, overlocking the seams. Finish the hem of the sleeves.
-
Finish the top edge along the neckline and the back neck by folding the seam under twice by ¼” (0.5cm) and stitching from the top edge of the tie (the neckline) along the neck to the other side.
-
Sew the ruffle: Stitch the front and back ruffles together, overlocking along the stitch line. Finish the side edges by folding the seam under twice by ¼” (0.5cm). Pin the ruffle to the kimono, align the seams and stitch. Finish the hem of the ruffle.
