Cut the front waistband piece on fold once, and cut the remaining pieces twice, making sure each side is mirrored. If using sheer fabric, create an additional set of patterns for the lining, except the sleeves, and shorten the shorts by 1” (2.5cm). Make the straps. Refer to the sewing guide for detailed instructions on making the straps.
-
Start by sewing the front piece to the back piece along the shoulder line, overlocking or zig-zaging the seams. If you’re not using lining, finish the neckline and back by folding the seam under twice (¼” or 0.5cm) and stitching.
-
Sew a loose stitch under the bust between the notch marks, securing it with backstitching on one end. Pull the thread on the other end to create a gathered effect, adjusting the fabric under the bust as needed to fit the waistband length.
-
Attach the front and back waistbands to the romper's top parts.
-
To stitch the crotch, stitch the front shorts along the center (not all the way through), ending about 2” (5cm) before reaching the edge. Repeat the process for the back, leaving space for the zipper. Complete the crotch by sewing the inner thigh seams on both sides and then closing the gap in the crotch. Overlock the seams. If you’re using lining, make another identical set of the romper (except for the sleeves), and stitch it to the romper along the neckline and back, stopping before reaching the back waistband for the zipper. Turn it right side out, and press with an iron.
-
Sew the sleeves: Match up the notches (one notch on the front piece matching one single notch on the front of the sleeve, and two matching in the back). Pin the sleeves and sew them to the romper's main body along the armholes.
-
Sew the romper on both sides, stitching from the sleeve hem to the short hem. Overlock the seams. If using lining, attach it to the sleeve armholes from inside and overlock the seams.
-
Sew in the zipper.
-
Finish the hem of the shorts and the sleeves.
-
Attach the back straps.
