Cut the front pieces once and the back piece on fold once. Cut the waistband once, and cut the belt on fold once. Mark all the notches by making small cuts into the seam.
-
Sew the darts: Start by marking the dart point using a sewing stiletto. Then, fold the dart in half along the notches and the marked dart point. Secure it with pins and stitch from the notches down about ⅝ inch (1.5cm) to create a tapered dart shape.
-
Use an overlock or zig-zag stitch to finish the seams along the button closure and hem of the skirt.
-
Stitch the skirt sides together, and finish the side seams with an overlock or zig-zag stitch.
-
Fold the front button closure seam along the notches at the top and bottom. Press it and stitch it about one inch (2.5cm) from the side.
-
Sew the loops: Fold the loop in half, press it, then unfold it. Press the sides of the loop toward the center by 1/4 inch (0.5mm). Close the loop and stitch along the edge. Attach the loop to the skirt ½ inch (1cm) from the waistline edge.
-
The waistband: Attach the waistband to the skirt, leaving a ⅜ inch (1cm) seam allowance. Then, fold the waistband in half lengthwise with the wrong side facing out. Fold the other seam toward the outer side and secure it with pins. Stitch along the front closure line of the waistband. Turn the waistband right side out, folding and concealing the seam. Pin the waistband to the skirt and topstitch it in place, using the first stitch line as a guide. Attach the loops to the top of the waistband by folding the edge of the loops under by ½ inch (1cm) and stitching it ¼ inch (0.5cm) down from the waistline.
-
Add buttons: Mark the button placements, create buttonholes, and sew on the buttons. Attach a flat hook and eye to the waistband.
-
Finish the skirt's hem: Overlock or zig-zag the hem, then fold it under and stitch it ⅝ inch (1.5cm) from the edge.
-
Sew the belt: Fold the belt in half and stitch the short edges as well as the long edge, leaving a small gap to turn it right side out. Press the belt flat and sew the gap shut.
